More about Sony's PSP

sony_psp.JPG
Massive news for gamers this week as Sony took the wraps off its Portable PlayStation (PSP) personal gaming device. Set to line up against the GameBoy Advance and the Nokia N-Gage when it launches this time next year, it will come in several guises at least one of which is likely to incorporate a mobile phone.

At the Transformation conference earlier this week Sony firmed up a few of the device’s features. The player will use a Universal Media Disc (UMD), which offers 1.8GB of storage. In addition to the games the discs can archive two hours of DVD quality/ four hours of VHS quality video footage.

Other features include

4.5in 16:9 widescreen ratio 480 x 272-pixel LCD,
90nm processor built from a MIPS 32-bit R4000 core.
8MB of embedded memory clocked to 333MHz
Bandwidth of 2.6GBps.
A second MIPS R4000 core will act as the PSP's media engine
Two dedicated graphics processors
Dolby 7.1 multi-channel audio, with 3D sound.
MP3, AAC and ATRAC3
AVC (H.264) and MPEG4 for video.
Wi-Fi for wireless gaming with other PSP owners

The PSP...it has the potential to be much better. If you want immediate satisfaction then the DS is the way to go. There is nothing special about it. It's not innovative. Don't get me wrong its a great little handheld. And for all you nay-sayers, I have both the DS and the PSP. Until the PSP gets some better software then the DS stays at the top of my list.

does anyone know how much it's gonna cost?

Posted by: Duane | Aug 31, 2004 2:13:09 PM

the psp wil be far to expensive for anyones liking! anyway the only advantages of the psp over the ds is the movies, music, and the bigger screen (which is sony's reply to the touch screen)! who needs all that when you have t.v's & walkman's? also all of the data is held on one of those umd things which means you will have to wait for the loading time!
nintendo has always been the king of portable gaming devices and that title will remain throughout 2005!

Can anyone help me with finding the PSP programming information. The system will have alot of hardware and I would like to program some software for it. Currently i program for the clie' and would like to move over to the new machine. Sony will not be selling the clie machine in the US any more. I have read that theUMD disk will only be distributed by Sony. I have found information about game programming, but that's all. Any help would be appreciated. I have posted this on the clie developers site also. Thanks....
